How to Build a Competitive Beyblade X Combo in NZ

As a fellow Blader and owner of Totara Hobbies, I’m constantly testing new combos. Building a winning Beyblade X combination is all about matching the right blade, ratchet and bit to suit your battle style, and importantly, having fun. With the latest Takara Tomy releases landing in New Zealand, there’s never been a better time to dive in and customise your own spinner. Here’s how to craft a competitive Beyblade X combo from parts we stock, including some fresh arrivals.

Understand the Three Key Components

A Beyblade X top is built from a blade (attack ring), a ratchet and a bit. Each part influences how your Beyblade behaves:

  • Blade: the outermost layer that determines overall weight distribution and attack potential. Blades like Shark Edge or Mummy Curse come with aggressive edges for high impact, while others favour balanced stamina or defence.

  • Ratchet: essentially the disc in older systems, the ratchet affects weight and stability. Higher numbers typically mean a wider, heavier disc for more centrifugal force.

  • Bit: the driver tip that contacts the stadium. Choose between aggressive flat tips for attack, semi-flat for balance or pointed tips for stamina.

Getting these three parts working harmoniously is the secret to a great custom Beyblade.

Choose your Battle Style

Are you an all-out attacker, a stalwart defender or a balanced strategist? Select parts that match your play style:

  • Attack combos favour heavier blades with sharp protrusions and flat bits. These sacrifice stamina for the chance to knock opponents out quickly.

  • Defence combos use smooth, round blades and pointed or ball tips for stability. A heavier ratchet and bit help absorb impact.

  • Balance combos mix elements from both. If you’re unsure where to start, a balanced setup is versatile and forgiving.

Selecting the right ratchet

Ratchets influence weight distribution. Lower numbers (e.g. 3‑60) are more compact and favour attack, while higher numbers (e.g. 7‑80) add heft and stability. For example, pairing the Shark Edge blade with a 5‑60 ratchet boosts attack power, but switching to a heavier 7‑70 ratchet from the Customize Set U transforms it into a formidable balance type. Don’t be afraid to mix and match to find the sweet spot.

Bits: Flat, Pointed or Rubber?

The bit (driver) may seem minor, but it dramatically changes your top’s behaviour:

  • Flat bits provide high speed and aggressive movement. They’re perfect for attack types like our Grip Flat (GF) driver included with the Shark Edge 5‑60 GF booster.

  • Pointed bits reduce friction for stamina. The Point driver from the Mummy Curse set keeps your top spinning longer and suits defensive strategies.

  • Rubber-coated bits offer increased friction for powerful knock‑outs but can wear quickly. They’re ideal for tournaments where that extra grip can mean victory.

Try combining a flat bit with a heavy ratchet on an attack blade for devastating hits, or pair a pointed bit with a smooth blade for endurance.

Example Combos to Test

Aggressive Attack Combo
Blade: Shark Edge (BXG‑06)
Ratchet: 5‑60 (included)
Bit: Grip Flat

Perfect for fast knock‑outs. Launch hard for a wild flower-pattern movement that corners opponents. Keep a spare bit; flat tips wear down faster.

Balanced Control Combo
Blade: Mummy Curse (UX-18)
Ratchet: 7‑70
Bit: Semi Flat (from UX‑10 Customise Set U)

A great all‑rounder. The slightly heavier ratchet and semi‑flat driver provide good stamina with bursts of aggression when needed.

Stamina Tank Combo
Blade: Random Booster heavy variant
Ratchet: 8‑80
Bit: Point

For those who prefer to outlast opponents. It won’t deliver big hits, but it’s resilient. This combo pairs well with larger stadiums where out‑spin wins.
